Local soccer players will be given the chance to pull on the green of Ireland thanks to a unique event which takes place early next month.

The Watershed in Kilkenny will play host to the Ireland National team trials, which could see local players that impress jetting off to Croatia to represent their country at the European 6 a side soccer Championships.

This unbelievable opportunity comes about because the Irish Minifootball Association (IMA) – who are organising the Kilkenny event - holds the licence to run the official Ireland 6 a side team.

The IMA will be sending a team over to compete in the fourth of these annual events, to be held in the beautiful Croatian coastal town of Vrsr, with the team looking to improve on last year’s showing.

In 2014 the Irish side performed at this level for the second time, acquitting themselves well in the group games, but losing out despite drawing their final game with Italy to pick up their first point at Euro level. It is hoped that with the new players involved this time, the team will be able to perform better.

Speaking of the opportunity, the IMA spokesman hailed the example of last year’s squad and added: “They were just ordinary players with ordinary jobs, but were all are thrilled to representing their country, which they did with great distinction.”

The trials date takes place on Monday 3rd August from 5-7pm at The Watershed, Kilkenny.

To apply for a place at the trials please send your name, address, email and playing position to info@irishminifootball.com  by Tuesday 28th July.
