Conor's Disappointment

The European 6 a side championships in Hungary is less than a month away. For the first time for three years, there will be no Irish presence at the tournament and skipper Conor Buckley has admitted he is upset that he won’t be leading out the boys in green.

“Everyone is disappointed” said the Dublin based skipper.

Ireland won their first match in the championships in 2015 as they saw off Turkey by the only goal and Conor reckons they could have done even better this time around: “Tournament football is based on experience”, he explained. “We only got together a month before the last tournament and were unlucky not to have qualified from our group after winning our first game. We felt we would be much stronger this year.”

As it is, the team will be watching and the proud leader couldn’t hide his jealousy: “The atmosphere at the championships is incredible” he recalled. “To wear your national jersey and hear your national anthem is a great feeling and it really adds to the whole occasion. I loved it.”
Ireland’s participation in future tournaments is up in the air pending further discussions with the FIA, and Sport Ireland – who as reported last year backed out of initial promises of assistance, forcing the Irish Minifootball Association to seek a bail out from the English – and Conor, who was skipper in both the 2013 and 2015 tournaments, before missing out through family issues in 2014 still harbours hopes of an emotional third trip.

“I would never say never”, he smiled when asked the question. “Last year was tough. “I would prefer just to be focusing on playing, but yes of course.”
